Run to the Portal!

"Not bad..."

submission: Run to the Portal!
date: November 17, 2006

The big bugbears on this one:

-- You have to hold down the arrow keys or peck like crazy to get your "dude" to move at all. Not as versatile as moving with a mouse.

-- I haven't seen a single 5 in the catch.

-- It seems like the 1s and 0s pop out even faster once you get near the cusp of the top of the screen.

-- If it were perfectly accurate to the vote system, you'd have to collect 200 numbers, and havea point threshhold to stay over. If your average drops below the average on each quota... (1.0 for 100 votes, 1.25 on 150 votes, and 1.6 on the 200th)... THEN you get blammed. And on the 200th, you get a final average score.

A finishing sequence for the victors (maybe a trophy or a comparison next to similarly scored flashes) would've been welcome.

Your choice in BGM, though, rocks.

Good concept. Just needs fleshing out.

Author's Response:

Several people have commented on the 5 not appearing. I've checked over my code and it has appeared for me. It is nearly an instant win, so I made it very rare. I might take down the power a notch and make it more common.

I'm working on some different scoring modes, such as one where you go for the highest score after 200 votes.

1s and 0s do not pop out faster, its just that you have less time to react. I am about to increase the player speed to make it a bit easier.

Oh Saviour!

"...whoa."

submission: Oh Saviour!

Though I was there to put the BLAMming vote on a couple of crud flashes before, I always wondered if there had been a video for protecting a good one.

Then I voted on The American Jerk...

O_O

...now I know.

The music. The pictoral theme.

That. Was. Awesome. You made my day. :~)

I have to admit, Da_Dinictus' "Oh Savior!" was awe inspiring when I first saw it... but this was pretty nice. Good job. ^_^b

"Shining like a star"

Simple. To the point, and friendly. If I knew anything about Flash, I'd actually feel like I could do it.

Nice job!

The Bahhumbuggers

"Ho! Ho! Ho!"

submission: The Bahhumbuggers
date: November 16, 2006

Very nice, imaginative, and original! though personally,

-- Haven't we all been through enough of a political ad wringer already?

-- I try not to get into Christmas until after Thanksgiving myself,

-- I think the Bahhumbuggers should run their own counter-attack ad (equal time and all), and...

-- I think we should have a "third Party" ad with three Middle East royal types on camels to remind us of the REAL Reason for the Season... knoWhoImean?

Aside from all that... Great!

Author's Response:

True true about Christmas stuff, but have you ever tried to hold off distribution until after Thanksgiving??

I work 6 months in advance for the holidays (I am in the greeting card business too) so I have been totally immersed in THE Season, Thanksgiving through New Years, since March (a 3 month production pipeline to get to the animation part).

Blame the Newgrounds Christmas Contest, started on December 10th. To tell you the truth I am holding back. I got LOTS of Christmas stuff and a few last minute things in production!

Tthe real reason for the season?...Jesus was born in April. The real reason for the season is a pagan soltice holiday, so I think rampant commercialism starting after Canadian Thanksgiving in October is perfect!

(Old) T.F.A.A.o.M. Intro

"Not bad for a first effort."

date: November 10, 2006

Admittedly, this is another work with beginner skills but professional heart.

Graphics are kinda rookie-ish, but the pictures move fast enough for the viewer not to be able to think of a good snark on them.

Pics move fast enough for with the tempo of the music, which has a great digital late 1980s verve to it.

Shows promise... I hope we can see a new and improved version with your grown skills soon. :-)

Albuquerque: THE MOVIE

"Off by 3, but you still win the Grand Prize!"

date: November 10, 2006

I'm amazed that you'd taken up the challenge of doing flash video-ing the whole song Albuquerque.

First the bad news... graphics and animation are kinda on the basic side. I mean it's not stick-figure bad (hey, I sat through the whole thing, didn't I?), but it's not exactly Shoo Fly quality.

Still you took your time, made it, and the work obviously payed off.

Comedic and music timing was perfect. And Al: what can be said that hasn't already? B-)

This'd be worth download even on dial-up.

You did excellently with this flash. Simple. Funny. To the point. And it even roped me into checking out the webpage. Mission accomplished. :-)

Could Be Worse

"Could Be Better.... but not by much. ;-)"

submission: Could Be Worse

I like the retro feel of the animation and the choice of music. The only fly in the ointment was that the sound effects toward the end sorta gave away the ending.

Still... not too shabby. :-)

Great film, if a bit on the uber-kawaii side. Music was really genki, too. Very nice production all around.
